Release 2.3 (December 2nd, 2024)
Release 2.3 of the Windows Me Update CD
contains a number of changes and improvements, including a completely
rewritten and optimised installer that offers better installation
reliability, more than 40 additional updates for Windows Me and
preinstalled components such as Internet Explorer and Windows Media
Player, a number of optional components that extend the functionality of
Windows, and new optional patches to fix issues and improve the
performance and stability of your Windows Me system.
It is recommended for all new installs,
and can now be installed as an upgrade on systems that have been updated
with earlier releases of the Windows Me Update CD.
For a complete list of changes in Release 2.3, refer to the Release Notes.
Release 2.2 (March 7, 2022)
This revision includes
some improvements to the installer, along with some update revisions and
bug fixes, and is a recommended update for all
new installs.
- The installer now automatically relaunches and resumes installation after a restart.
- The installer now checks to ensure it is being launched from within the same working directory prior to starting installation.
- Revised the installer folder structure so INSTALL.BAT is easier to locate in Windows Explorer.
- The
post-install script to address issues in the Internet Explorer KB908519
update (T2EMBED.DLL) has been rewritten as a Setup INF file.
- Added several new Windows Me updates to the main installer, including 269874USAM (DCOM IStream::Write() Corrupts Data with No Error Return), 825119USAM (Buffer Overrun in Windows Help and Support Center Could Lead to System Compromise) and ME260710 (WMI Does Not Return SMBIOS Data).
- Added Microsoft Jet Database Engine 4.0 SP8 and associated updates as a default install, as Microsoft Jet 4.0 is included in a standard install of Windows Millennium Edition.
- Altered the main installer to install updates for Windows Script 5.5 (JS55MEN) instead of 5.6 (KB917344) included in previous versions of the Update CD, as 5.5 is the included version with Internet Explorer 5.5. Microsoft advises against installing a mismatched version of Windows Script. (Version 5.6 and the associated update KB917344 are still included with Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1.)
- Updated Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 component updates to include Windows Script 5.5 instead of 5.6.
- Added KB887606 update (The Microsoft XML Parser Uses Cached Credentials Incorrectly) for MSXML 2.6 SP3 and MSXML 4.0 SP2. This update was not required for MSXML 3.0 SP7.
- Added Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime 6.0 as an optional component.
- Updated Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Runtime component to latest version (SP1 w/ MFC Security Update).
- Added MDAC Component Checker as an optional component.
- Removed Mydoom Removal Tool.
Release 2.1 (November 21, 2021)
- Corrected an issue where installation would fail on systems where the PATH environment variable did not include a WINDOWS\COMMAND path.
- Some computers experienced issues with the second stage of installation, where the majority of the individual updates and fixes were installed. A second restart step has been added to break this segment into two and reduce the number of packages installed between restarts.
- Update package titles in the installer now reflect their Microsoft Knowledge Base or TechNet article titles.
- Added several new Windows Me, Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player updates to the main installer.
- Altered the installer to install some updates applicable to preinstalled versions of Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player, even if the preset options to install IE 5.5 SP2 and WMP 7.1 are deselected.
- Replaced DirectX 8.1b with DirectX 8.2, which consists of DirectX 8.1b and the DirectPlay 8.2 update in a single installer.
- Added new DirectX 8 updates.
- Added new Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 and 6.0 SP1 updates, with new automatic install scripts for each.
- Added new .NET Framework 1.0 and 1.1 updates.
- Added new Windows Media Player updates and codecs.
- Added Visual Basic Runtimes, Tweak UI, Font Properties Shell Extension and Mydoom Removal Tool as optional components.
- The CD now includes fun extras for your Windows Me system, including special edition desktop wallpapers and an offline version of the Windows Media Player Skins Gallery.
- The CD now includes Rudolph Loew's system enhancements and stability patches as optional installs for added convenience.

Some modern anti-virus scanners may incorrectly flag the automatic installer and some component update scripts as
containing malicious code (BAT/ExitWindows). This occurs because the
installation batch scripts call the SHELL32.DLL SHExitWindowsEx
function to restart the computer at each interval when required.
This is a documented function and a Microsoft supported method of restarting a computer running Windows Millennium Edition.
In the past, some malicious scripts may have also called this function to unexpectedly shut down or restart a users computer when run. Anti-Virus scanners have since been designed to flag batch scripts that call this function as potentially malicious, even in instances where this function call is being used correctly.

@lord_pollax "ExitWindows" refers to any script that calls the Windows SHExitWindowsEx function to shut down or restart a users computer. The installation
...
scripts used on the Windows Me Update CD make use of this function to restart the users computer at each restart interval and when the installation of updates has completed.
In the context of this CD, these detections are a false positive. I have amended the item description with a notice to this effect.

Downloaded on 2/22/25 and it was flagged by Avast as having 6 trojans: (BV:ExitWindows-M [Trj] )
These were located in 6 INSTALL.BAT files found inside ... the ISO.
This may be a false detection, but wanted to put the warning out just in case. Scan your download before use.

No issues at all with installing this pack. A fully automated script handled all the updates.
Have you thought about integrating these updates in Win ... Me install ISO? We have a lot of projects with modded & updated versions of XP, and they are very convenient. Having one ISO to install an updated version of Windows Me would be very welcome.

Such a great project. Though I had problems myself updating (no problems at all when manually booting to safe mode each time, running the script inside
...
to continue installation).
Waiting v2.3 soooo much! :D

Thank you for making this excellent Windows Me update collection. I've never seen such an organized update pack. I ran it on a P3 system upgraded from
...
98SE to Me and the updates installed almost flawlessly.
A small thing that's maybe already documented, but I needed to install DirectX 9 from safe mode, otherwise it just hangs on "Initializing...". In safe mode it installed fine as did the DX9 update.
Looking forward to testing the next version. Thanks again for doing this important work for retro enthusiasts who like Win Me.

it's works good but i can't install .net 2.0 it complains about windows installer 2.0 and when I run the installer for 2.0 it says it already there
i ... wonder if the .net 2.0 that's packed in is to new or windows installer is broken.

Windows just hangs at "completed updating files, continuing to start windows", and requires a hard reset. step by step boot shows msmouse.vxd.
